An artist studies many things (both the environment and it's contents - lorving or inanimate) to develop their understanding and awareness of the thing's appearance and structureso that it becomes easier to illustrate these things, similar things, things based upon them, abstract things, or concepts. These things are usually reffered to as subjects; they are the form that is either being analused or depicted. A subject may merely be prsent or it may be used by an artist to portray a meaning, the meaning usually communicted through theme/ interelation of individual elements (the collation of subjects recognised on their own and as a whole, the context and it's effect on the subcject and the subject and its influence on the surrounds).
One example of a subject is people, referred to as portraiture, unless the body functions as a surface on which to use materials, utensils, mediums, etc. As to say that the person is modeliing
